We’ll Be Comin ‘Round The Mountain When We Come!

Posted on May 9, 2013 by Jacquie B in Blog, Jacquie B, News, Tour 9 Comments

greener than greenSpring has finally sprung here in Edmonton, AB. Last week’s blizzard is this week’s tan line.

Jacquie B here, talking at you through your technological device’s screen. It’s been a few months since our last communication and I hope you’ve been great in the mean time.

It’s been kind of surreal at points to have been here, back home, for a long period of time. Not moving. Routine. Catching up with friends and getting farther in the conversation than “Wow, how have you been? I’m headed to ____ next. Yeah, it should be fun.” Let’s just say, the last 5 months have been thoroughly enjoyable as well as therapeutic.

I’ve been practising yoga, working on alligning my body, mind, and spirit. The last year or so of constant touring was like a game of pin the tail on the donkey! Having been all over the world but without the time in between adventures to really digest and debrief, well, that has a definite effect and I sure did feel the weight of it all by the time Christmas came along. (Not to mention the effects on the body – nutritionally and physically speaking.) I just slept for days and days. For a long while, I didn’t sit down at the piano. I didn’t sing a song. I stretched, I cooked, I read, and I squeezed my family and friends so tight and thanked them profusely for loving me and supporting me. For still being there when I stopped.

Then, slowly but surely, the songs began to emerge.

Sometimes one just needs to STOP in order to move forward. We all burn out at some point and it’s important to recognize when a break is in order.

Picture the Ocean will be heading out on tour this May/June and July with just about an entire album’s worth of new songs. There’s a definite departure, yet an unmistakeable recognizability. This will mark the first time where all 3 members of the band are fully coming together to write. A joint creative endeavor. We’re in the middle of 2 weeks of rehearsals to get as many of them as possible up and running for the road. Of course, we aren’t forgetting the pretty much still new songs off the album that is just shy of a year old. No worries there. But I can’t tell you how cathartic it is for us to have a few new songs to share! We’re artists! What are we if we’re not creating!?

Personally, I’m looking forward to hitting the wide summer roads. Working my butt off every day these last couple months (working 2-3 jobs) has given me a definite appreciation for the folks with “regular” jobs and has humbled me more than you can know. It’d been 4 years since I was a part of that world. I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to slink in and out of it.

See you out on the road really really soon! I can’t wait. Check out the tour dates here.

Also out on the road this May/June is our beloved friend Scott Cook with his delectable trio and his FABULOUS new album One More Time Around. The best one to date in my opinion. A real work of genius and beauty. You can find his tour dates here.

***If you’re ever in Edmonton, I reccommend you check out these establishments:
Elm Cafe and 3 Boars Eatery. Sweet vibes, local, organic, DELICIOUS food, and INCREDIBLE staff and owners. You can’t go wrong. I’m honored to be included among these fine folks.

Jacquie B, new songs, regular jobs, time off

Looking Back on 2012

Posted on January 13, 2013 by Jesse Dee in Blog 10 Comments

So, it’s actually 2013! We made it! The world didn’t end and we are still here, doing whatever it is we’re doing. Hopefully we can appreciate it a little more than before, I know I do (not that I believed the world was actually going to cease to exist, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t curious about it).

What a roller coaster of a year that 2012 was! For this band, we made miles like never before… Changed our name, recorded and released an album, toured the Yukon and Alaska, Haida Gwaii where Jesse and I announced our engagement, the US got to know us a bit, hung out in T-dot for a month, touched down in the UK and Europe for our first taste of international overseas touring, went off the beaten path and toured India for a few weeks, came back to Canada and toured back across the country from Toronto to Dawson Creek, BC and back home to Edmonton (and Vancouver) just in time for the holidays. We were voted Top 11 of 2012 on CBC Radio 1′s The Key of A with Katherine Duncan, participated in Alberta Untapped & the TransCanada Alberta Music Series (both of which were aired throughout the year on CKUA). Now we’re on “break” time and looking back, it’s hard to believe we actually did all that! Feels like a dream now…

So, you might be wondering what it is we’ve got planned for THIS year, and that is exactly what I’m going to share with you now, oh yes!

2013 sees us breaking for the first few months of the year; the cold, wintery, slippery months. In the last 2 years, this band has been living on the road and in hotels or sleeping on many a good friend’s couch/bed, without taking more than 2 weeks’ break between tours or recording. We haven’t truly rested in so long that this last tour home, back in December, was both excruciatingly difficult and wonderfully nostalgic. Now, Jesse and I are cozied up in Edmonton in an old house with a piano and the most comfortable bed ever, writing and playing and visiting and relaxing and cooking and getting healthy at the gym and the Yoga Loft. Matt has been enjoying time with his family and friends in Vancouver, also eating delicious home cooking and relaxing and enjoying just being in one place. We will be chilling in the same city for once so the songs we’ve been brewing on the stove top of our minds will finally have a chance to percolate. By the time spring and summer make their grand entrance, this band will have a whole new bag of tricks and licks ready for the many festivals we hope to play!

So don’t forget about us alright? We’re here, we’re just not on an insane touring schedule anymore! We’ll be gigging as side mates and recording with friends too. We’ll be getting inspired and enjoying the kind of routine you might think of as boring, but it’s like they always say: the grass is always greener, right?! And too, there’s a wedding to be planned! So much is happening! We’ll be updating you here at picturetheocean.com with any and all plans, news, changes, and other such reasons.

If you want us to play a festival near you, please feel free to send the organizers our way!

If you want us for a house concert some time this spring/summer, please email bookings@picturetheocean.com, subject: House Concert

UK/Europe tour complete, down time adventuring, India: see you soon!

Posted on October 24, 2012 by Jesse Dee in Blog, Jacquie B, Tour, Uncategorized 5 Comments

Well, well, well… That was quite the experience!

I didn’t think we’d ever get to the point where we’re at Pearson waiting to board and then BLAM! There we were cruisin around the UK like it was our job! And, I guess, it was our job… haha We played some wonderful shows and met some incredible people, thanks to Jez Hellard the magnificent.

Our UK favorite was indeed Letham Nights in Scotland – thanks to the lovely crew there (Roy! Claire! Michael! Dougie! Mick! Emma! and the pizza dudes! and the rest of the folks who make that monthly event happen!) and we are most certainly going to find our way back there again. If you’re curious about it, you can read a review of and check out the photos from the lovely hall performance here. And then there was The Magic Garden in Battersea, London which was also fantastic and equal in the hospitality and genuine loveliness of the folks we met, ie. Corneilius! Connor! and Matt! Wow. Thank you again for everything. It’s so important to feel AT HOME while on the road, and now especially in foreign countries when you are so far from the folks you know and love, and we definitely felt at home in the company of these wonderful people.

Although there were a few hurdles to jump and a couple road blocks to dodge, specifically in London within the LEZ (Low Emission Zone, which encompasses the world’s busiest international airport, btw), we made it through with our best, albeit fatigued, smiles on. We will definitely do it differently next time, but never try never know, right?

On to mainland Europe we went for a gorgeous evening in Bois Colombes, Paris, Fr with Canadian friends and folk duo Scarlett Jane. This performance was magical and most certainly what we’d call PROPER. It was French-Canadian week in Paris and Lezarts et la Scene, specifically the indubitable Pascal, invited Scarlett Jane and Picture the Ocean to be a part of this wonderful event held in a lovely 300 soft seat theatre with a creative lighting crew and an amazing sound crew. We hope we can do that again next time!

If you haven’t checked the Facebook photos, you can check out some of the professional photographs captured here. The band enjoyed a few days off in Gaie Paris and took about a million photographs which you can find on the band’s Facebook page. How surreal it was to be walking along the streets of such a stimulating and OLD city! You don’t even need to pay anything to walk around and look at all the amazing architecture and sculptures telling stories of an ancient time. Scott Cook said it best: “In Europe, 100 kms is a far distance, whereas in north America, 100 years is a long time.”

We then booked it for Nancy, FR where we met up with a couple of beautiful Macedonian women (hi Anna! hello Juju!) who hosted us for the night – friends of Jez’s. Then, BAM! We were spat out in the center of Stuttgart, DE after navigating our way through the incredibly busy (and über fast!) traffic and then through a tunnel which lead us underneath the city from the outskirts! So cool. Café Galào — a phenomenal music venue serving up the best in everything, ie. atmosphere, food, staff, drinks, hospitality, and music. Reiner Bocka is the sweetest man no the face of the planet. We loved it so much we stayed 2 nights (well… it was more that we had such a wild drunken evening after the show that we couldn’t even move the next day and Reiner graciously let us stay in his apartment an extra night.)

Dusseldorf, DE was next up for a house concert we’d booked over a year before and which was the main reason for this band even going to Europe in the first place. Where the Birds Fly c/o Corneilia and Guido. I feel like we’re family now. It was beautiful and warm and packed with music lovers who were so silent at times, you could honestly hear a pin drop! We recorded this performance, both the audio and video in highest quality possible, and we’ll be posting these performances as soon as we can so stay tuned!

Thanks to all the rest of the pubs and clubs who took a chance on booking an unknown band from Canada and Australia. And, most of all, thanks to Jez for putting his neck out for us and booking the whole damn thing as well as carting us from place to place. We are forever indebted.

But for now, we are on separate paths until we meet back up at Heathrow and fly to crazy Bombay, INDIA where we’ll gig and travel for the month of November. Matt Blackie can be spotted throughout Germany & Czech Republic. Jesse and I are holed up in a sweet apartment here in Amsterdam for a few extra days and then we’re going to check out Brussels. Jane is visiting with family south of London and will be squeezing in a weekend trip to Barcelona.

Much love from Europe! Stay tuned! Thanks for reading.
